Preparing Your RV for a Long Road Trip: A Pre-Trip Checklist

June 20266 min read

The best RV trips are the ones where nothing goes wrong. A thorough pre-trip inspection is the single most effective way to avoid breakdowns, stay safe, and enjoy the journey. Use this checklist before every long trip, or have a technician handle a professional pre-trip inspection for you.

Tires and Wheels

Check tire pressure on all tires including the spare, inspect for cracks and uneven wear, and confirm the lug nuts are torqued correctly. Tire failure is one of the most common and most dangerous roadside problems, so this step is critical.

Fluids and Engine

Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Look underneath for any signs of leaks. For motorhomes that have been sitting, this is especially important.

Brakes and Safety Systems

Test your brakes, including trailer brakes if you are towing. Confirm all exterior lights, turn signals, and brake lights work. Test your smoke, carbon monoxide, and propane detectors and check your fire extinguisher.

House Systems

Make sure the items you depend on are working before you leave:

  • Test the air conditioner and furnace
  • Confirm the refrigerator is cooling on each power source
  • Check the water pump, water heater, and for leaks
  • Verify house and chassis batteries are charged
  • Test slide-outs, awning, and leveling jacks

Secure the Interior and Exterior

Stow and secure everything inside, latch cabinets, and make sure nothing will shift while driving. Outside, confirm the steps are retracted, the antenna is down, compartments are latched, and the hitch and connections are secure if towing.

Pack Emergency Supplies

Carry a basic tool kit, spare fuses, a tire-changing kit or roadside assistance plan, extra fluids, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and water. Being prepared turns a potential disaster into a minor inconvenience.

Consider a Professional Pre-Trip Inspection

For peace of mind before a big trip, a professional pre-trip inspection covers all of these systems and more. A mobile technician can come to your home, go through everything, and address any issues before you hit the road.
